In spite of everything, he still underestimated her. Mallory raised the wooden limb overhead and decided she would make him pay for that mistake.

“Whether things end with Sommerville collapsing or the people ripping us apart like they did to Summer, you’re going to be here to face it with me.” He lowered his voice to where only Bennet could hear. “There’s a price to be paid for what we did, Bennet. And I’m not paying that bill alone.”

Something’s wrong. That was the first thought Bennet’s mind conjured upon waking up. He forced his eyes open and struggled to sit up in bed, groaning as the movement reawakened his injuries. Black and purple splotches decorated his skin like spilled paint. The mere act of breathing was accompanied with sharp pains. He gingerly touched his side before withdrawing his hand with a hiss. “Bastard broke my ribs,” he murmured in disbelief.  Bennet bit back a swear as he forced hims

"For whatever lies ahead, I want you both to remember that people like us are in charge because we are willing to make the right decisions; even if those decisions seem wrong to everyone else.” She paused, as if silently evaluating their reactions. “Are you capable of that? Of doing what needs to be done, no matter the cost?”

“I wish you hadn’t come out here.” There was only one voice that could have reached her through such a storm. 

“Tye has another message for you.” “Which is. . .?” “Keep a tighter leash on Mallory.” He looked at Bennet meaningfully. “Or else he will.” 

“If you ever question my dedication to Sommerville again, I’ll send you to another compound the moment your baby is born,” Tye hissed in her ear. “I’d sooner have the child grow up motherless than be raised with a head full of lies.”
